Jamborees Kick Off '96 Season Friday

Jamborees kick off the 1996 football season, which begins on Friday. The jamborees will be the last of their kind, with teams adding a ninth regular season game next season.

HOMESTEAD JAMBOREE

At Fort Wayne, the Whitko Wildcats went further than any other local team in the 1995 tournament. The Wildcats, coached by Bryan Sprunger, advanced to the sectional championship game before bowing out. The Wildcats hammered Maconaquah 53-14 and then downed Bishop Dwenger 26-18 before losing to Harding in the championship.

Whitko competes in Friday's Homestead Jamboree, which begins at 7:30 p.m.

Whitko, 8-3 last year, meets Homestead in the first quarter, and then the Wildcats face Carroll (Allen) in the second quarter. Carroll meets Columbia City in the third quarter, and Homestead plays Carroll in the last quarter.

MISHAWAKA JAMBOREE

At Mishawaka High School, a six-quarter jamboree will be played Friday evening.

The Warsaw Tigers, led by first-year coach Phil Jensen, are tested early in a battle with defending 5A state champs Penn in the second quarter. The Tigers, 3-6 last year, then face Marian in the fifth quarter. Warsaw lost to Chesterton in the sectional opener.

Also, St. Joseph meets Mishawaka in the first quarter; Elkhart Memorial meets Marian in the third quarter; Penn plays St. Joseph in the fourth quarter; and Mishawaka battles Elkhart Memorial in the sixth quarter.

The Mishawaka Jamboree begins at 7 p.m.

ROCHESTER JAMBOREE

At Rochester High School, the Tippecanoe Valley Vikings play Plymouth in the second quarter and then face Caston in the third quarter.

Rochester plays Caston in the first quarter, while Plymouth faces Rochester in the fourth quarter.

Head coach Scott Bibler led Valley to a 6-4 record last year. Valley defeated Lakeland 26-14 in the sectional opener before losing to NorthWood 12-3 in the second round.

The Rochester Jamboree begins at 7 p.m. Saturday.

GOSHEN JAMBOREE

At Goshen, the Wawasee Warriors meet Concord in the second quarter and then face Jimtown in the third.

Goshen faces Jimtown in the first quarter, while Concord meets Goshen in the fourth quarter.

Wawasee, coached by Gene Mitz, went 1-8 last year. The Warriors lost their sectional opener.

The Goshen Jamboree kicks off at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Gates open at 6:30 p.m.

WABASH JAMBOREE

At Wabash High School, the Manchester Squires play Wabash in the first quarter and then face Southwood in the third quarter.

In other games, Northfield meets Wabash in the second quarter, while Southwood faces Northfield in the fourth quarter.

The Squires, led by Al Bailey, won only one game last year, but they made it count. They picked up their first win in the sectional and went on to finish with a 1-9 record.

The Wabash Jamboree begins at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Gates open at 6:30 p.m.

BREMEN JAMBOREE

At Bremen High School, the Triton Trojans play Bremen in the first quarter and then face LaVille in the fourth quarter.

LaVille plays John Glenn in the second quarter, while John Glenn takes on Bremen in the third quarter.

Triton went 3-6 under Brad Shields last year and lost its sectional opener.

The Bremen Jamboree begins at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Gates open at 6:30 p.m.
