ELKHART COUNTY - A 90-year-old man was killed today in a crash between his bicycle and a car in Nappanee.
According to the Indiana State Police, the fatal crash occurred in the 2100 block of North Main Street/Ind. 19 in Nappanee just after noon.
Preliminary investigation by Trooper Brandon Johnson indicates that at approximately 12:35 p.m. today, the 90-year-old man was riding a three-wheeled bicycle northbound on Ind. 19 when the bicycle is alleged to have turned left to go into a business in front of a tan 2008 Hyundai that was traveling south. The crash caused the cyclist to be ejected from the bicycle, according to the ISP. Arriving first responders attempted life-saving measures on scene, but the cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Hyundai, a 63-year-old Nappanee woman, was not injured in the crash.
Neither alcohol nor drugs are suspected to be factors in this crash, however, toxicology tests will be completed as required by Indiana law on all parties involved in serious bodily injury and fatal crashes, the release states.
State Road 19 was shut down between CR 150 and East Woodview Drive for the crash investigation, with Ind. 19 reopening at 2:25 p.m.
The Indiana State Police were assisted at the scene by the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office, Nappanee Police Department, Nappanee Fire and EMS, and the Elkhart County Coroner’s Office.
