SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko senior Logan Irwin made his verbal committment in the spring, but Wednesday afternoon, he made his college destination official.
In a room located in the main office of Whitko High School, Logan Irwin put his name on the dotted line of his letter-of-intent to attend school and play basketball at NCAA Division I Stetson University.
"It's definitely a relief, because now I don't have to worry about it," the 6-foot-1 guard said. "Now I can just worry about the games this year and getting wins."
Located in DeLand, Fla., which is situated in the middle portion of the state between Daytona Beach and Orlando, Stetson offered Irwin an opportunity he couldn't pass up.
"He couldn't have picked a better situation, with what they offer and his style of play," his father and high school coach, Rob Irwin said. "He may be able to play right away, and if he doesn't, it will be his own fault."
Entering his senior season, Logan is coming off a season in which he was named and Indiana Junior All-Star and became Whitko's all-time leading scorer with 1,556 points. Along with being the program's all-time leading scorer, he also is the leader in made free throws (483) and steals (139), and his 307 career assists is just 10 shy of the school record.
As a junior, Logan averaged 25.1 points, shooting 49 percent, while also posting 5.5 assists and five rebounds per game. He led the Wildcats to a perfect Three Rivers Conference season, winning the TRC for the second time in three years.
Now that he has his college choice nailed down, he can focus solely on his final year of high school basketball.
"I would like to be an Indiana All-Star, but winning is the biggest thing this year," he said. "It's the team before anything else."
This season, which begins Nov. 23 at home against Columbia City, will also mark the last time Rob Irwin coaches his son, but that also affords him a way to watch Logan play in a different way.
"Everything is going to be different," Rob Irwin said. "This will be the last year I'm watching him as a coach. I'm happy to be able to root and cheer for him at Stetson. I'll be able to cheer as a fan."
