SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko High School senior-to-be Logan Irwin has made his college choice, and he's choosing a Division-I school. Irwin chose Stetson University, a school located in DeLand, Fla., and a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference, Tuesday after visiting the school with his family. "It's a huge relief that I don't have to worry about it anymore," Irwin said about ending his recruitment. "It can take away from the fun of playing." His verbal committment came Tuesday, based mainly on his relationship with Stetson coach Casey Alexander. "Alexander was at Belmont (University) for a number of years before taking the Stetson job," said Rob Irwin, Logan's coach and father. "He'd been recruiting Logan for about a year. Once we got on campus, Logan knew he was just the guy he wanted to play for." Over the course of his high-school career, Irwin has become Whitko's all-time leading scorer and currently has 1,556 points. The relationship between the coach and player is important to him. "He just tells the truth and is straightforward," Logan said about Alexander. "He's not telling you what you want to hear. He challenges decision." Along with the coach, Logan was also drawn to Stetson's sports management program. "The educational part was a big part of my decision," Logan said. The university is situated in a spot where Logan can hone his craft effectively. "He'll be able to get some baseball internships in the area, along with NASCAR," Rob said. "The school is 22 miles away from Daytona Beach and about 30 from Orlando. So, it's a good opportunity." And before he can start applying for those internships, Logan can also visit some of the beaches in the neighborhood. "It's not a bad location," Logan said. The view may be good for Logan, but it is an 18-hour drive for his parents to come see him, so that will be an adjustment. "It will be a little different," Logan said about not playing in front of his parents. "But I do have some family down there." Logan said he has grandparents living in Florida, but he also expects visits from his parents from time to time. And when they can't make the trip, they can watch his games online, if not on television. "All the games are streamed online and the conference also has games of the week on television," Rob said. "So, we'll be able to see some of his games, but we've also talked about getting out there." During the course of his junior season at Whitko, the 6-foot Logan averaged 25.1 points, 5.8 assists, 4.9 rebounds and 2.4 steals a game for the Wildcats, who finished the season with a 16-6 record. Logan is currently playing offseason basketball with his Whitko teammates and will take part in the Indiana Class Basketball All-Star Classic Friday and Saturday in New Castle.
