WINONA LAKE - Gerardo Mafisa Gonzales, 31, of South Scott Street, Warsaw, is in critical but stable condition at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne, this morning after a 1:33 p.m. two-vehicle collision Monday.

Alcohol was a factor in the accident, according to a Winona Lake Police Department spokesman.

The accident occurred on King's Highway, Winona Lake, between School and Fifth streets. According to the spokesman, Gonzales was driving his Pontiac Sunbird north on King's Highway, and when he started heading west, he lost control of the vehicle, which then spun around and the car ended up in the lane in front of an REMC truck.

Gonzales was trapped in the vehicle, and the Jaws of Life had to be used to get the man out of the vehicle. According to the spokesman, the impact was on the driver's side of the vehicle, causing the front bumper to fold into the inside of the car. Gonzales reportedly was not wearing a seatbelt.

He was airlifted to Parkview Hospital by Samaritan Helicopter. The driver of the REMC truck, Larry W. Roe, 31, Peru, reported no injuries at the scene.

Assisting the WLPD at the scene were the Warsaw Police Department, Multi-Township EMS and the Warsaw Fire Department.
