Warsaw Police Dept. Lt. Kip Shuter provided updates on local Indiana Department of Transportation projects during Thursday's Warsaw Traffic Safety Commission meeting.
Shuter said INDOT rejected a request from the city to create a turn lane at the intersection of Ind. 15 and Gilliam Street. He said INDOT denied the request because the intersection did not warrant a turn lane and would obstruct driver's views.
He also said the city has received requests from residents for pedestrian crosswalk signals to be installed at two intersections, including Ind. 15 and Fort Wayne Street and Ind. 15 and Main Street.
Shuter said he made a request to INDOT to install pedestrian crosswalks at the two intersections and is waiting to hear back from them.
"The pedestrian crosswalk would assist with pedestrians who cross the street near Warsaw Community Public Library and Center Lake Park," Shuter said.
City Planner Jeremy Skinner said a study would need to be conducted for a pedestrian crosswalk.
Shuter also said Michiana Area Council of Governments conducted traffic counts this summer at streets by local schools.
Traffic counts were performed at Kincaide Street, Ind. 15, Prairie Street and Union Street, by Washington Elementary School; near Warsaw Community High School by Ind. 15, Rozella Road, Prairie Street and Logan Street; Edgewood Middle School, Kincaide Street, Ind. 15, Union Street and Prairie Street; and Eisenhower Elementary School on Ranch Road and CR 200S.
He said INDOT will conduct another traffic study at the areas this fall.
"The purpose of the study is to determine the traffic flow difference when school is not in session and is in session," Shuter said.
Traffic Commission members are Shuter, Skinner, Steve Foster, Greg Schroeder, Ann Sweet, George Clemens and Joe Thallemer.
