NORTHEAST INDIANA – The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) announced its 2026 chip sealing schedule.
Starting on or after June 1, crews will chip seal more than 300 lane miles across northeast Indiana.
During chip seal operations, existing pavement is coated with liquid asphalt, which seals cracks and provides waterproof protection. This extends the service life of the roadway and lowers maintenance costs, according to a news release from INDOT. Once the roadway is coated with liquid asphalt, aggregate is applied and excess material is swept from the roadway. After a curing period, crews will return to fog seal the new driving surface and apply pavement markings.

Crews will close each section of road to through traffic for approximately four days at a time and drivers will need to seek alternate routes. Local traffic will still have access to these areas and will be guided by a pilot car while crews are working.
Chip sealing work is weather-dependent and schedules are subject to change.
INDOT encourages drivers to consider safety for all by slowing down, using extra caution and driving distraction-free when travelling in and around all work zones.
