INDIANAPOLIS -ÊAlthough Miss Basketball Shanna Zolman is one of the most recognized players in the state of Indiana, some people still have trouble remembering how to say where she's from.
Including her Indiana All-Star coach Donna Cheatham.
In a postgame press conference, Cheatham referred to last week's Junior All-Star game at Zolman's alma mater "Wa-WAW-see."
"WAW-waw-see," interjected Zolman with a smile.
"Zolman territory," continued Cheatham.
While the Tennessee-bound Zolman had the worst game of her career in Indianapolis at Saturday's Indiana-Kentucky All-Star Game, the Indiana squad picked up a 72-65 win over Kentucky to avenge last week's 79-77 loss in Owensboro, Kentucky.
"That was by far my worst game," said Zolman. "I did a lot of things mentally that I shouldn't have done. I could not seem to get in a rhythm. I'm definitely not sending a tape of this game to (Tennessee) Coach (Pat) Summit."
Zolman started the game 0-for-11 shooting and did not score for the first time until the 21.8 second mark in the first half. But in the final 21.8 second of play, Zolman hit a three-pointer and 1 of 2 free throws to go into the half with four points.
What she lacked in scoring, Zolman made up for in other areas. In the first half, Zolman pulled down seven rebounds, grabbed two steals and dished out an assist.
Things improved a little for Zolman in the second half. In the final 20 minutes of play, she went 3 for 9 from the field, but she was 5 of 9 from the free throw line. In all, Zolman missed five free throws in the game.
"Free throw shooting is 90 percent mental and 10 percent technique," said Zolman. "I am a 95 percent free throw shooter, but I was not on mentally tonight."
In all, Zolman was 4 of 21 from the field and 6 of 11 from the charity stripe with nine rebounds and four steals. She led the Indiana All-Stars with 15 points.
Northern Lakes Conference player, NorthWood standout and Purdue-bound Carol Duncan led the Indiana squad with 14 rebounds. She had four points, two blocked shots a steal and an assist.
"Carol was big in this one," said Cheatham. "She played with a lot of heart and a lot of desire. I would not say that we wouldn't have won without her, but it would have been awfully tough. Having her in there gave us a whole new ball game.
"Carol played well when we were up in Zolman Country Wednesday as well. She really made a difference for us inside."
The Kentucky All-Stars fought back in the second half and took their first lead of the game at the 6:33 mark in the second half, but Indiana fought back to pick up the win and avoid a Kentucky sweep of the series.
Kentucky's Miss Basketball Erica Hallman led the southern squad with 26 points and nine rebounds.
