I was recently urged by friends to write more "letters" to your paper to reinforce the importance of agriculture's story. It seems that special interest groups are telling the public the wrong story about agriculture especially here in Indiana.
One place that I urge everyone to visit is Farmers Feed Us (www.farmersfeedus.org.) By entering your state name you will be given the opportunity to hear eight Indiana farmers talk about their products: pork, eggs, beef, lamb, corn, soybeans, fish and dairy.
You can then fill out the form given and be entered into a contest to win $5,000 worth of groceries. This prize will be given away in mid-May. The trivia questions pertaining to each agriculture product is very informative and we all can learn something about Indiana. Do you know that it takes 24 to 26 hours to produce a single egg, or where Indiana rates in ice cream production in the United States?
Farmers Feed Us is a joint effort of the agriculture groups and commodity organizations in Indiana. But all producers of farm products need to get behind the effort to get the correct story told. Don't let a few organizations like HSUS and PETA tell the wrong story. The large amount of money they throw behind their advertising needs to be offset with you and I telling our neighbors and friends the correct facts about agriculture.
Farmers from across the state work hard so that not only families here in Indiana, but around the world can enjoy good safe food by raising healthy crops and livestock, while protecting and conserving our land. Let's all get behind this effort.
