The Warsaw Chess Club and its affiliated school programs are celebrating another year, marked by tournament showings and communitywide support for the game of kings.
In 2025, every school in the Warsaw district fielded a chess club, giving students across the district opportunities to learn and compete. On Jan. 11, many Warsaw players participated in the Indiana State Individual Chess Regional, which was hosted in Warsaw, and a number of them qualified for the state finals held in Hammond on Jan. 25, according to a news release from Warsaw Community Schools.
Chess team competition was a highlight in February and March. On Feb. 15, four local schools — Edgewood, Lincoln, Madison and Washington — qualified for the Indiana State Chess Team Championship, sending teams to Martinsville on March 22 for competition. Warsaw players held their own against some of the best in the state, with Madison Elementary finishing seventh and Washington Elementary earning an fourth place.
A highlight of the season was the annual Checkmate Hunger chess tournament, hosted on March 15 at Madison Elementary. The event was a success, drawing 160 players from across the district. Students from every Warsaw school participated, joined by players from Sacred Heart School and the local homeschool community. Leesburg and Claypool Elementary stood out with particularly strong turnouts.
On April 26, Warsaw sent representatives to the Indiana State Girls Chess Championship in Indianapolis.
With record participation, strong state-level performances, and rising interest at every grade level, 2025 marks another milestone year for chess in Warsaw — one that promises great things ahead, the release states.
