Immigrants

I don't write in too often, but, occasionally, I like to voice my opinion and throw my 2 cents in.

There's been so much talk lately about illegal immigration that I am ashamed at how greedy and selfish our nation has become. None of us would be living in the United States if our ancestors wouldn't have come here to make a better life. In fact, our ancestors came here and took this land away from the Indians! Was that legal? Back then it didn't seem to matter because there was no government to corrupt everybody's minds.

I understand why so many people come here; they want a better life. America is supposed to be the land of freedom and opportunity ... is that only for the American people? That's one heck of a way to say, "Welcome to America."

Now I do agree that if a person/family wants to live here and work our jobs and enjoy what we take for granted, that they should also learn our language. In fact, I believe it was President Roosevelt that said, "English shall be our first language." (Please correct me if I'm wrong on that.) But what's so wrong with broadening our horizons and expanding our knowledge to help those that cannot speak English learn English? I also agree that they should have to pay taxes - just like we do.

I have visited another country, barely speaking their language. Do you know how I was treated? I was treated with respect and welcomed into their homes.

It's the simple golden rule people: Do unto others as you would have done to you!

Are we, as a nation, so narrow-minded and full of hate that we cannot share our beautiful country? Are we really so greedy and selfish, like our ancestors who took this land, that we cannot share this land?

I sure hope God shows up more kindness and mercy than we've shown the immigrants - or so many are in for one heck of a shock!

P.S. Our government wastes more money than what is spent to provide for the "illegal" immigrants. Why are we pointing our fingers in the wrong direction?
