Illegal Immigrants

Editor, Times-Union:

While our Congress and Senate continue the debate on how to cut the funding for our troops fighting in Iraq, the subject of immigration no longer seems to be the focus today by either our politicians or the news media. Does this mean that the problem has been resolved? Or, could it be that our politicians know that immigration is a hot topic, which they cannot fix, and choose purposely to avoid the issue all together? Why? Has our news media stopped pounding the doors of our elected officials on Capital Hill on this subject? Anyone with common sense can see that the problems surrounding this issue have not been corrected by either our federal, state or local governments.

One problem in America today is that if anyone has the nerve to speak out against any particular group or issue, his or her reward is ridiculed by some of our news media - a fact that I believe has discouraged the efforts of some of our spineless government officials. In my opinion, most politicians do not want to risk being known as a bigot or racist for fear of losing a vote. While others in my opinion have been bought off by big-name companies to remain silent.

America is indeed the greatest country in the world to live in. I do not blame anyone for wanting to live here. But when someone from another country sets foot on American soil illegally, it is a violation of our laws, plain and simple. Today, we enforce the laws for drunk driving, murder, drugs, theft and the list goes on. But who is enforcing the immigration laws for Indiana? The Hispanic population in Warsaw is growing larger in number every day. Where is the accountability?

I wonder how many of the Fat Cats in American today have taken advantage of these poor Hispanics who work in their fields or factories for less than minimum wage with no medical or health benefits, the very reasons why these people risked their lives to flee a corrupt Mexican government in the first place? Why hasn't President Bush taken a stronger stance against the government of Mexico for failing to stop these ongoing border crossing violations? How many terrorist have we allowed to cross our borders since 9/11?

In my opinion, the issue of the number of illegals in our country today is not just a problem, but also a serious dilemma that is headed for disaster unless the American public takes a stand and starts sending letters or making phone calls to our elected officials to let them know that enough is enough. It should be apparent to all that we have elected officials who lack the fortitude and nerve to take the necessary steps to end this blatant injustice that is overloading our Social Security and health care systems today. For certain, the Democratic Party will never resolve this issue. It will take the voice of the American people.
