Ice Rescue

Posted

North Webster Emergency Medical Service Paramedic Mike Oberg pulls Doug Darr, 62, of Leesburg, to shore from the icy water of Big Barbee Lake Monday morning. Darr fell through the honeycombed ice while he and Jerry Hapner, 62, of Syracuse were fishing. Hapner is pictured in the background holding the rope that he used to keep Darr stable until rescuers arrived. Darr was later pulled to safety by North Webster Fire Department and EMS personnel. Conservation officers with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources said anyone venturing out onto the ice should use extreme caution this time of year. Above-normal temperatures are expected throughout the week. Photo by Gary Nieter, Times-Union
