SYRACUSE - Human remains were discovered in a wooded area near Syracuse Thursday evening and police believe the person's death came about as a result of foul play.

Kosciusko County Sheriff Aaron Rovenstine said that the remains were found in a wooded area off CR 1050N on the east side of Lake Wawasee. Evidence at the scene indicates that there was foul play, Rovenstine said, but he declined to elaborate.

The human skeleton was found by people who were mushroom hunting in the woods and then contacted authorities. Police were notified of the discovery at 6:28 p.m.

Rovenstine said it was confirmed that the bones are human and that evidence at the scene indicates that the remains are possibly those of a young adult female. However, the age, race and sex of the victim are not officially known.

Local authorities, along with Indiana State Police technicians and a team of forensic anthropologists, were expected to process the scene late this morning.

The scene was sealed immediately after its discovery and Kosciusko County deputies guarded the scene throughout the night to preserve any evidence remaining.

The Kosciusko County Coroner's Office also is involved in the investigation.
