HS Football Pairings Announced

Posted

The Indiana High School Athletic Association drew pairings for the 1999 state football tournament today.

In Class 5A, No. 9 Warsaw will host No. 4 Penn.

Warsaw and Penn currently have a 13-1 combined record. While the Tigers won their first ever sectional game a year ago, 46-20 over Marion, Penn advanced to the semistate, where it fell 9-7 to Homestead. The Kingsmen have won the state championship three of the last four years.

"You have to play them sooner or later," said Warsaw coach Phil Jensen. "If you want to win state, you have to go through Penn."

Jensen graduated from Penn in 1983, where he played for current Kingsmen mentor Chris Geesman. Jensen was asked about the coaching matchup.

"A lot of the success we're having is a tribute to him," said Jensen. "I've learned a lot from them, and I'm still learning. We'll take care of that when it comes."

Among other local state-ranked teams, No. 5 (3A) NorthWood will host Fort Wayne Elmhurst.

Listed are the sectional pairings for local teams.
