WINONA LAKE - Terry Howie is seeking re-election to the Winona Lake Town Council District 2 seat to continue to represent his constituents.
Howie was elected to the District 2 seat in 2007, and has served since 2008. He has served as council president for the past two years.
Howie, a Winona Lake resident since 1964, served as a police officer for the town for 25 years and served as town marshal from 1990 to 1995. He has owned and operated his own business, Howie Heating and Cooling, since 1972.
He earned a bachelor's degree in 1968 from Grace College, and worked for the college in 1964 in the custodial department. He left the college and worked at Robinson's Supermarket, Warsaw Locker Plant, Ditto's Supermarket as a meat department manager, and Duane Gable's Housing Construction.
Howie said he has enjoyed serving on the council, and is seeking re-election to continue to serve the town's people.
While serving on the council, he said, he worked with the council and a committee to establish a sewer treatment agreement between the town and Warsaw.
"We established a 15-year sewage treatment agreement to reduce the sewage rate for Winona Lake residents so we don't need to build a sewage plant," Howie said.
He said, while serving on the town council he has encouraged transparency and public input.
"I've tried to represent the people over the last three years, and give them the opportunity to share their concerns," Howie said. "I want to make the best decisions for the whole town, not just the one or two individuals or a small group of individuals."
Another accomplishment, Howie said, while he has served is the council voting against the town joining the Warsaw-Wayne Township Fire Territory.
"We looked at joining, but there would have been an approximately 46 percent increased tax rate for Winona Lake residents if the town joined the territory," Howie said.
He said, if he is re-elected he would like to continue to support the greenway initiatives and continue to work on getting Stonehenge Addition streets repaired.
"We are being very careful that we don't get the cart before the horse and making sure the streets get repaired correctly," Howie said.
While he has served on the council, the CR 250E road improvement project was completed, and the town implemented sidewalk improvement and tree replacement programs.
