Howard N. Uhrig, 87, of North Manchester, died at 1:45 p.m. Aug. 2, 2011, in Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne.
He was born May 25, 1924, near Phillipsburg, Montgomery County, Ohio, to Alfred and Mary Surber Uhrig. On June 26, 1949, he married Mary Kathryn Fish, who survives.
He graduated from Phillipsburg Ohio High School in 1942. He earned a bachelor’s degree in physics from Manchester College in 1947. He earned a master’s degree in audio visual education from Indiana University.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
In 1957 he became an administrator of South Bend Community Schools and later director of media services and the audio-visual department, retiring in 1986. He was an active Rotarian for more than 50 years and a member of North Manchester Rotary Club, St. Joseph County Mental Health Association, South Bend, State Audio-Visual Association, member and former president of Phi Delta Kappa. He served on district boards for Manchester College of the Brethren. He taught physics and math at Noble High School Wabash for two years and Whites Institute for one year. He taught audio-visual education and engineering and engineering drawing for three years at Manchester College. He received special recognition from the Rotary Club, Phi Delta Kappa, and the St. Joseph County Mental Health Association with the naming of the Uhrig Apartments. 
Also surviving are a daughter, Rebecca (and spouse Lowell) Shearer, Fort Wayne; a brother, Damon Uhrig, Troy, Ohio; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Aug. 12 in Timbercrest Chapel, 2201 East St., North Manchester, with Pastors David Bibbee and Kurt Borgmann officiating. Burial will be in Manchester Church of the Brethren Memorial Garden, North Manchester.
