WINONA LAKE - Laura Kaufman appeared before the Winona Lake town council this morning to discuss an Indiana Housing Authority Grant application of $250,000.
During a public hearing Kaufman, Housing Opportunities of Warsaw director, said she is fairly confident the grant will be approved.
The owner-occupied rehabilitation funds are available to property owners who make less than 80 percent of the area's median income.
Pre-applications, brochures explaining income requirements and the application process are available at HOW in Warsaw and in the Winona Lake clerk's office.
During the 2002 budget public hearing the council heard the estimates for the general fund of $867,663; motor vehicle-highway, $882,674; local road and street, $90,000; park and recreation, $46,500; EDIT, $263,000; local law enforcement education, $2,500; redevelopment district capital, $50,000; redevelopment district bond fund, cumulative capital development, $110,000, for a total budget of $2,312,337.
Net assessed property valuation was advertised as $25,850,500. The estimated maximum the town can raise through taxes is $869,760, with current levels at $820,165. Revenues from other sources will total $1,145,528.
The council will hold a second public hearing Sept. 11 at 6:15 p.m. to adopt next year's budget.
Town coordinator Craig Allebach said water samples will be taken from the lake near the South Shore Subdivision soon.
