Homestead Ends Warsaw Run

COLUMBIA CITY - As the Warsaw girls soccer team traveled to Columbia City for the sectional final against state-ranked Homestead, dreams of an upset ran through their heads.

When all was said and done, the Warsaw girls played hard but were unable to overcome the experience and skill of the Homestead Spartans and were defeated 4-0.

The dream remained just that, a dream.

"We played exactly the way we wanted to play," said Warsaw coach Brent Wildman.

With 31:48 left in the first half, Homestead went straight up the middle and found the goal for the first time.

The second Spartan goal came less than three minutes later when Homestead went straight up the middle again.

"We set up to contain them down the lines," said Wildman. "They scored their first two goals up the middle. They took a risk and came out on top."

After another Homestead goal with 25:29 left in the half, the score stood at 3-0 as the teams took the halftime break.

Warsaw's defense got a workout in the second half, but were successful in the attempt to stifle the Spartan scoring rush.

The score remained 3-0 for most of the second half, but with 11:26 remaining in the game Homestead scored another goal to make the score 4-0.

Warsaw held Homestead scoreless for the rest of the game but was unable to put the ball in the goal for themselves as the game ended 4-0 with Homestead on top.

"They found our weaknesses and exploited them," said Wildman. "We had hoped to keep them hidden, but they found them."
