Homeschooler Wins Middle School Bee

Posted

Tonight's Kosciusko County spelling bee final contest will be a battle of the homeschoolers after Joshua Lawrence, HELPS Homeschool, won the middle school spelling bee Wednesday.

Lawrence, a seventh-grader, will compete against sixth-grader Stephanie Henning, who won the elementary bee Tuesday night.

Lawrence won over Whitko Middle School student Antimony Grant in the final round when she misspelled "irascibility" and he spelled it correctly. He then correctly spelled "perpendicularly" to win the bee.

Seven middle-schoolers, the top middle school spellers in the county, gathered on the stage at Lakeview Middle School Wednesday, and slowly and thoughtfully spelled such words as "caterpillar," "collateral" and "indictment" to make it through more than 10 rounds before the final round.

The winner of tonight's finals will compete in the area spelling bee March 16 in Fort Wayne.

Finals tonight will be at 7 p.m. in Lakeview Middle School auditorium.

Judges Wednesday were Caroline Nye, Michelle Ball and Tina Wuthrich; announcer was Dr. Paulette Sauders; and coordinator is Shannun Reed.
