Military personnel, emergency services workers and police were honored Thursday night at the VIP Night Celebration for the 2008 Homes on Parade.
This year's parade, which is at Shadow Lakes Phase III, is open Saturday through Sept. 14.
Thursday night's theme was "Salute at Shadow Lakes, Honoring Those Who Stand In Harm's Way" and included a flyover by a World War II Navy fighter plane along with the recognition of several military officers and other public servants.During the opening ceremony, builders, suppliers, decorators, landscapers and everyone who had a hand in the 2008 Homes on Parade were recognized.
The event's VIP night sponsors, Kosicusko REMC and First Federal Savings Bank of Rochester, were introduced and thanked for their participation.
Builders Association Executive Officer Joni Truex introduced the military and service workers present at the ceremony as a light drizzle fell on spectators.
Then Kosciusko County Emergency Management Director Ed Rock entertained the crowd with his rendition of "God Bless The U.S.A." Once Rock finished his performance, the event was moved into the VIP tent where the builders participating in the Homes on Parade were introduced.
The builders of the six homes in the parade this fall are: Mission Contracting, Renewal Homes LLC, Skyline Builders, Granite Ridge Builders and TL Jackson Construction. Mission Contracting has two homes in the parade.
Catering was by Bogey's Steakhouse, serving pork chops with barbecue sauce, mashed potatoes, green beans, rolls, green salad and desserts.
Combinations of carpet and ceramic tile floor coverings are common in most of the homes. One home has a built-in water feature in a dining room wall, and warm, inviting colors can be found in the decor.
Photographic renderings of the homes and floor plans were contained in a special section in Thursday's Times-Union.
This parade runs Saturday through Sept. 14, and is open from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, 1 to 8:30 p.m. Saturdays and 1 to 5:30 p.m. Sundays. Admission is $5 for ages 13 and over, ages 6-12 are $1, and children under age 5 are free.
