All summer I have had on my mind the homeless and how they could be cared for again this winter.
Ken Locke and I have served together for many years with The Salvation Army. Ken has spent timeless hours trying to promote a permanent shelter for our community needy. He was fortunate enough in the past couple winters to have some local churches come forward, but they have enough problems of their own. Ken even last winter gave up his army offices to make a shelter.
When I read in the Times-Union a shelter was in the making, I thanked my God some interested people have come forth to make it happen. Then later I read in the Times-Union it was on hold now. I pray the people involved never have to walk in their shoes. They would certainly have had a different outlook. The shelter needs to be located within the city for convenience for all involved.
I traveled for the State of Indiana School Food and Nutrition where USDA foods were delivered to schools, child care, etc. Rescue Mission downtown South Bend and still there. I visited it many times and never did I see one person on the street, they were in the building where activities were organized and controlled.
Now I trust the people involved give more prayer and thought, think if they were one of the needy, would wish for a shelter.
God bless each one of you, you are interested so hope soon you will make it reality.
