I read your News Views in Saturday's paper and you addressed some important issues but you failed to mention issue one.
What are the hungry and homeless supposed to do while all this communicating is going on and the various agencies are getting all their ducks into a row so we can have a permanent homeless shelter in Kosciusko County?
I'm afraid the communicating will end up being procrastinating. After all, Kosciusko County should have had a shelter 50 years ago.
All that is needed for a temporary solution is enough money so food and housing can be purchased wherever it is available. Kosciusko County is the third-highest county in the state of Indiana in terms of per capita income. Millions of dollars come into this county every week. Additionally, there are over 100 churches in the county besides a good number of other Christian enterprises.
I believe there are hundreds of individuals, businesses, corporations, farmers, churches, etc. that would send a check to make sure that no young mother and her infant would have to sleep in a tent behind Kmart. The problem is that few, if any, would-be donors know where to send the check.
I would suggest that if the Times-Union is interested in doing something practical to get beyond square one that they insert each day an ad (2 col x 2 in) on the page with the letters to the editor that would contain the mailing address where donations could be sent and also a phone number that someone in need of food or housing could call. No matter when or where or what is decided on for a permanent shelter I'm sure it is going to require a lot of money. It is time to get started.
Think of me what you want but I don't want to crawl into my warm, dry, comfortable bed one more time wondering if some young mother is in dire circumstance. I can't handle that.
For those who don't think the hungry and homeless should be of any concern to them I would suggest you read Luke 16: 19-31.
