All Keith and Sherry Hurley could do was watch as the home they lived in for six years was gutted by fire Thursday afternoon.
The home, located off CR 200W near U.S. 30, was destroyed after the garage attached to the home caught fire. The Hurley's Chevy Silverado also caught fire.
Fire department crews were dispatched around 1:30 p.m. Thursday."I'm not quite sure what happened," said Keith Hurley. "I'd think it'd have to be electrical."
The Hurleys and their four children were home at the time of the fire, though no one was hurt.
Atwood and Plain Township fire departments worked to put out the blaze, while Warsaw Fire Department assisted.
"The wind really worked against us," said Atwood Assistant Fire Chief Chad Heckaman of the conditions Thursday afternoon.
The fire spread to the floor of the home. Crews needed an hour to get the fire under control and were on scene for more than three hours.
As crews worked to put out the blaze, a hole was cut in the roof, and windows had to be knocked out.
The damage to the home was a total loss.
Keith Hurley said his family rented the home and they didn't have renters insurance.
The American Red Cross put the Hurleys up in a hotel Thursday night and are currently assisting them.
