Home Hit by Second Fire in 20 Years

ATWOOD – A home that caught fire more than 20 years ago once again sustained heavy damage Wednesday afternoon.

Atwood Fire Department responded to a blaze at 312 E. Main St., Atwood, around 4 p.m.

While the fire was under control by crews in about 30 minutes, firefighters were on scene until 9:30 p.m. dealing with hot spots that arose.

According to Atwood Fire Chief Mike Harmon, the homeowner, Dee Cleveland, lost the family dog, a chocolate labrador.

Harmon said the fire started in the bedroom of Cleveland’s daughter.

A fan in the room was sitting on a milk crate, Harmon said, and firefighters believe the fan became hot causing the crate to melt and the fire to start.

When firefighters arrived they attempted to rescue the dog but to no avail.

While the home wasn’t a total loss, Harmon said it did suffer heavy smoke and heat damage.

Harmon said the fire didn’t get into the home’s rafters.

The same home survived another blaze years ago.

On Oct. 18, 1990, when the home was owned by Dick and Addie Swanson, it caught fire.

The couple and several of their grandchildren were home at the time of that blaze.

According to family members, Dick was recovering from heart surgery at the time of the fire.

That fire started in the same room as Wednesday’s fire.

Etna Green Fire Department assisted at the blaze while Warsaw and Mentone Fire Departments let their tankers be used.
