Michelle Ball's fourth-grade students at Pierceton Elementary School had the privilege of hearing guest visitor Doris Fogel April 20. Fogel is a Holocaust survivor and the executive director of the Fort Wayne Jewish Federation. Fogel spoke to the class as a summation to readings the class has done this year pertaining to Anne Frank and the events of the World War II Holocaust. Fogel's family left Germany after KrystalNacht, and were able to relocate to the country of China because that was the only available destination for refugees without papers. Her story reminded the students of what the world was willing to overlook and ignore for far too long and the detrimental effects of the events during WWII. Fogel emphasized to the students that peace begins with each of us, individually - within ourselves, with our friendships, in our homes, in the hallways at school and on the playground. She gave students a memorable reason and a clear understanding of how important it is that we never forget.
