On senior night for the Warsaw Community High School girls soccer team, it was a sophomore who supplied all the scoring.
In a 2-0 Northern Lakes Conference home win over Goshen (9-5-2), Warsaw sophomore Meredith Hollar scored in the fourth and 13th minutes, propelling the Lady Tigers (9-5-2, 4-2-1 NLC) to a 2-0 win in the regular season finale.Hollar's opening goal came quick, at the 36:35 mark, when she squared a ball up inside the box, and zipped it past Goshen senior goalkeeper Gabby Garcia.
"That was great goal," Warsaw coach Dan Miller said. "I don't know if many goalkeepers could have stopped that. It was a bullet. I thought she played well tonight."
Hollar's 16th goal of the season came as she ran past the Goshen defense, before being pulled down inside the box, resulting in a penalty kick score.
Although it was Hollar getting the goals, Miller was pleased with the effort of the entire squad.
"Tonight, we did a good job of possessing the ball," he said. "That's something we had gotten away from over the last couple of weeks. Tonight, yeah Meredith scored a couple of goals, but the by-product of that is the great work of moving the ball around, from feet to feet, and us keeping the possession."
After the two early goals, the scoring opportunities decreased for the Lady Tigers, who didn't get their first shot on goal of the second half until 17:20 remained.
"Goshen's always a very good defensive team," Miller said. "They really, at times, put a lot of numbers behind the ball to make it hard for us to score. That being said, we had some chances in the second half."
While the outcome of the game was evident by the late stages of the contest, the health of senior goalkeeper Dee Monroy was not.
After sliding out to save a shot with just two minutes remaining, the clock had to be stopped while she knelt down to regain her composure.
"My heart skipped a beat," Miller said about Monroy being slow to get up. "I'm confident in our backups, but at the same time, she's a senior, three-year starter. So, yeah, I was hoping she was going to work through that, and I'm sure she'll be fine."
Monroy gets a shot to show she's fine when the Tigers travel to the East Noble Sectional to face Lakeland in the 7 p.m. game Monday.
