Hit The Links, If Weather Holds

Posted

With the Memorial Day weekend upon us, it would be a good weekend to get out and hit the links for a few rounds of golf. But of course, we live in Indiana, and it looks as though the weather isn't going to cooperate.

We can only hope, can't we?

Speaking of golf, here are a few observations on the game as I unleash the second season of my column about the sport I love, but can't seem to play well - yet.

The biggest thing I have been wondering about is the explosion in golf equipment over the past few years. The question I have is can you really buy a better game. I know the big thing is to get everything from balls to clubs to bags.

But after it is all said and done, will it make that much of a difference? I am glad to see that you don't have to go totally broke because there seems to be a lot of knockoff brands available over the Internet and direct mail. This is good for all of us underachievers (and I am talking in golf and in terms of salary).

Another thought concerns the PGA tour. Man, does it seem that there are more guys who are capable of winning every week or what? When Tiger Woods jumped onto the golf scene, everybody was saying how he would just dominate the tour. But it seems to be just the opposite. There is no one player who is totally mopping things up. Is this good for the game or does it make it tougher to identify with a player and watch him win or lose a tournament? Hard to say, but I think in the long run it will be good for the tour.

And finally a thought on Curing Your Slice. This program (which was national, but had plenty of places to go locally in May) seems to have done just what it was supposed to. After talking to Rozella Ford pro Dave Huffman, it seems as though a lot of you duffers out there took the opportunity to get a free golf lesson. Albeit just for 10 minutes or so. Huffman said that he was busy on Rozella's Cure Your Slice day and even went beyond the four-hour time he had allotted. He said that he even had some people who didn't have appointments, but they walked in and got some lessons anyway. Hopefully, it helped.

And in other notes:

First Hole-In-One At Raccoon Run

The newly renamed Raccoon Run (now under the ownership of Denny Hepler and Dane Miller) got a first of sorts Thursday with the help of Dave Poole.

Poole got the first hole-in-one at the course on the No. 3 hole. Poole aced the 130-yard hole with a 7-iron.

Witnessing were Lynn Smucker and Rusty Koenishof.

IGA Mid-Am Team Championship

In the IGA Mid-Am Team Championship May 17-18, Warsaw's Jerry Nelson teamed with John McCutchan to shoot a four-over 146, good for a tie for 22nd place. The Nelson/McCutchan team shot a 74 on the first day and a 72 the next.

Former Stonehenge owner Ray Harroff team with Bob Miller to finish in 46th place with a 152, 10-over. The team shot rounds of 77 and 75.

New Driving Range

Paige's Crossing (Columbia City) has unveiled a new all-weather, double decker driving range and practice facility. It can be used in the winter and summer with heat and air conditioning, depending on the season. It also has a double decked launching pad for protection from the elements and extra room on top for crowded days.

Paige's Crossing is located on U.S. 30 in Columbia City.

Other Holes-in-one

Helen Miller

Helen Miller aced the No. 13 hole at Tippecanoe Lake Country Club May 17. The No. 13 hole is 129 yards. Witnessing were Loren Miller, Judy Calhoun and Jim Calhoun.
