Hit-Run Driver Sought After Two Hurt In Mo-Ped CrashTwo people on a mo-ped were hurt – one seriously – early Sunday morning when their mo-ped was hit by an unknown vehicle that fled the scene.
The driver of the mo-ped, Michael J. McGrath, 44, of North Prairie Street, Warsaw, was taken to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne for head injuries suffered in the crash, according to a news release from the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department.
A female passenger, Shelly R. McGrath, 42, of same address, Warsaw, suffered non-life threatening injuries during the collision and was treated at Kosciusko Community Hospital. A KCSD accident report listed her injury as pain to her hand.
The accident occurred at midnight Saturday on Ind. 15, about 200 feet south of Monoquet Road, Warsaw. The news release states the mo-ped was northbound and appeared to have been hit by a vehicle from the rear.
The McGraths were found on the eastern edge of Ind. 15. When a KCSD deputy arrived to the scene, he found Shelly McGrath rendering aide to Michael McGrath, who was laying on the ground, conscious and breathing but unresponsive, according to the accident report. When the officer asked Michael what happened, he was unable to respond but continually attempted to get up off the ground after being asked to lay still until medics arrived.
Shelly said they had just left Walmart and were traveling north on North Ind. 15. She said a vehicle hit the back of the mo-ped, knocking her and Michael off. She said she did not see what kind of vehicle hit the mo-ped but it left the scene headed north on Ind. 15.
As of this morning, police were seeking help in finding the vehicle. KCSD requests anyone with information to contact Investigators at 574-267-5667.
The Kosciusko County Fatal Team was assisted at the scene by members of the Warsaw Police Department, Lutheran EMS, Plain Township Fire Department and the KCSD. The accident report estimates damage to be $2,500-$5,000.
