History

Editor, Times-Union:

If we don't learn from history, we're bound to repeat the sad mistakes of the past.

But if we do learn from history's successes, we can then climb higher on the ladder of success than our ancestors ever did.

On Aug. 13, 1981 President Ronald Reagan signed "The Economic Recovery Tax Act" at the "Ranch" in California. It was the largest tax cut in American history. This idea was the opposite of the "power-grab" irresponsible, egocentric, "spend your way into prosperity" catastrophe of today.

After signing the historic act, President Reagan said: (in 1982) "What I'm describing now is a plan and a hope for the long term - the march of freedom and democracy which will leave Marxism and Leninism on the ash heap of history as it has left other tyrannies which stifle freedom and muzzle the self-expression of the people."

This act, followed by conservative, common-sense fiscal decisions, delayed for about 28 years the historic, wild "spending spree" that began last fall with the election of Democrat Barak Hussein Obama as president of the United States.

(Can you conjure up into your wildest imagination: Thomas Jefferson, et. al., passing a measure and signing it into "law" that is thousands of pages long, and which not even 2 percent of the signers had time to read, let alone debate, that obligates them and their offspring for untold trillions of dollars, for who knows how many years, and at unspecified interest rates, etc.?) Talk about common sense. (Watch anyone who urges, "trust me" and gives you not a slightest reason for you to think his word is worthy of trust.)

I 'm now wondering what my grandchildren (not future generations) will think of my sanity, integrity, morality, etc. to allow God's beautiful gift like the USA to come to such an hour as this without any real protest on my part. (But I voted ... ) But have I lived with complete integrity and right principles, and encouraged as many others as possible to do the same?

Abraham Lincoln is one of my several heroes. Ronald Reagan is another. Let me share with you a quote from "R. R." "We meant to change a nation, and instead, we changed a world." - 1989. And one from 1985: "We are one people under God, dedicated to the dream of freedom that He has placed in the human heart, called upon now to pass that dream on to a waiting and hopeful world."
