Calling all Kosciusko County area high school and junior high school students.
Are you looking for something new to do this summer? Consider being a “Historical Marker Hunter” here in Indiana and a future hobby as you travel around the world.
No need to like history, all people need is the enjoyment of taking photos and surfing on the Internet.
According to the Indiana Historical Society website, there are many Indiana historical markers in North-Central Indiana. This is not counting Historical Markers other type of “organization” and war memorials.
Several of these markers are listed on the Historical Marker Database website, www.hmdb.org, but not all of them.
Become a marker hunter and find each marker, take photos and upload them to HMdb. Beside being free it is very easy to do. Soon people will be published as photographer and/or contributor.
Like making videos? Consider producing a video about the marker subject (process through “YouTube” or “SchoolTube”) then link it to the marker page.
People can use old video, a stack of still photos to make a video with music, or try to re-enact a given event.
A lot of history is missing. There are many historical markers about men, but what about the women who helped shape this county?
In-depth research, old photos and old newspaper clippings are a plus. Many historical places need their interiors photographed. Ask about photos of remodeling or construction – they, too, are important items to include.
A second part of this summer project is to look for the gaps in our county’s history. How can you fill the gaps? Be a history detective and dig deep. Check those old family shoe-boxes for a hidden photo of something important. Items can always be added later.
