Highway Garage Sale Planned Aug. 12

Within the next 30 days, cities and towns throughout Indiana, Ohio and Illinois plan to participate in a cooperative garage sale along the historic Lincoln Highway.

Warsaw plans to take part as well, with a sidewalk sale and numerous events scheduled for Aug. 12.

Because areas of Center Street and Old 30 are technically part of the Lincoln Highway system, private vendors will set up booths and displays around Warsaw's downtown and Lake Street to peddle various wares to the event's shoppers.

Also scheduled for the day will be a Big Wheel Race hosted by Warsaw's Breakfast Optimist, Penguin Point and the Warsaw Community Development Corp.; a watermelon fest; children's activities and a Shriner Parade.

"I could see this being a big event for the summer," WCDC Director Carmen Lock said. "People will be involved all over the state."

Other communities anticipated to participate in the event are Fort Wayne, South Bend, Goshen, Plymouth and Columbia City.

The Warsaw garage sales are scheduled from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug 12, with the Shriner's Parade following at 5 p.m. All other event times currently are pending.

At this time, vending spaces are not open to the public.

The Lincoln Highway, with numerous branches of roadway throughout Indiana, was the first coast-to-coast paved road with a route from New York to San Francisco.
