Warsaw Lady Tigers Win Ninth Swimming Sectional

The Warsaw Lady Tigers won just two of 12 events but showed off their depth in winning the program’s ninth sectional championship Saturday.

Warsaw, the host school for the girls swim sectional, set school records in winning both the 200 medley relay and the 200 freestyle relay, while Manchester freshman Halle Briner set school records in winning both the 200 and 500 freestyle races on a day that saw a number of records fall.

The winning individual – or relay team – in each of Saturday’s 11 swimming events advanced to the state finals, which will be held Friday and Saturday at the IUPUI Natatorium in Indianapolis.

The top four finishers in the diving competition, which included third-place finisher Tiphanie Hodge of Tippecanoe Valley, qualified for Tuesday’s diving regional at Mishawaka.

Warsaw’s 200 medley relay team of Lauren Kuhl, Delaney Wihebrink, Taylor Gunter and Olivia Herman touched the wall in 1:50.91, beating Rochester’s quartet by nearly two seconds.

In the 200 freestyle relay, Herman, Gunter, Laurel Moeller and Wihebrink won in a time of 1:40.34.

Moeller finished second in both the 200 and 500 free, while Wihebrink was the runner-up in the 100 breaststroke and 200 individual medley, and Herman finished second in the 50 free.

The Lady Tigers used their two wins and five second-place finishes to score 396 points and win the team title for the second year in a row.

Culver Academies was second in the team standings with 349 points, followed by Columbia City (270), Rochester (268.5), Cass (214), Plymouth (154), Manchester (132), Huntington North (126), Wabash (97), Pioneer (90.5), Tippecanoe Valley (89) and Logansport (32).

Briner won the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:56.20, beating Moeller by nearly five seconds, and the 500 free in 5:18.74, touching the wall nearly nine seconds ahead of Moeller.
