High School Students Share Knowledge of Trout with Elementary Kids

Posted
Trout brought high school and elementary students together Thursday afternoon.
Since January, students in Abbi Richcreek’s Bio Tech class at Warsaw Area Career Center have been raising trout at school.
She also had her 15 high school students develop lesson plans to teach fifth-graders from Washington STEM Academy. Thursday afternoon, the 60 fifth-graders trekked over to the high school for those lessons.
Andrew Wade, WACC student, said the project to work with the elementary schools was successful and everyone learned a lot.
“I didn’t know anything about trout before,” Madison Dobbins, WACC student, said.
Brad Scherer, WACC student, said he learned about the different species of trout, their habitats, that they are very high maintenance and “pretty much everything.”
“All the fundamentals of taking care of trout,” added Wade.
The hardest part about raising trout, Scherer said, was keeping the water clean. They had to pump 10 gallons of water out of the tank and then put 10 gallons of clean water in.
“We also had to keep the pH levels constant,” he said.
“It was a lot harder than I thought it was going to be,” Scherer continued.
Today, weather permitting, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources will release the trout into Eagle Creek.
