Wawasee Downs Garrett, Lighthouse CPA To Win Tourney
SYRACUSE – After rolling to a 60-27 win over Garrett, Wawasee defeated Lighthouse CPA 57-44 in the championship game of the Wawasee Holiday Tournament in boys basketball at the Hardwood TeePee Friday.
Austin Miller led the Warriors in the title game with 20 points. Keaton Dukes had 15 points and Ethan Hardy scored 13 points and grabbed a game-high six rebounds.Jaydon Boyer added seven points and Jack Stover two in the winning effort.
In the semifinal against the Railroaders, Wawasee blanked the visitors in the opening quarter and never looked back. Miller had 20 points and Hardy 13 as 10 players scored for the Warriors.
Now 6-3 for the season, Wawasee will host Columbia City in a non-conference tilt Tuesday night.
LCA Boys Drop Pair
WINONA LAKE – Lakeland Christian’s boys basketball team dropped its first two games in the Cougar Classic tournament at Grace College Friday, falling 76-50 to Fort Wayne Canterbury in the opener and 64-37 to Clinton Christian.
In the Canterbury game, Cameron Shepherd had 15 points and eight rebounds, and Seth Martin added 10 points and seven boards. Silas Gagnon had five points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
Against Clinton Christian, Shepherd matched his total from game one with another 15-point performance, and Martin added 11.
LCA (2-9) takes on Granger Christian at 11:30 a.m. today in the fifth-place game.
Lady Cougars Sweep, Will Play For Tourney Title
WINONA LAKE – Lakeland Christian’s Lady Cougar basketball team won both its games Friday in the Cougar Classic to advance to Saturday’s title game. LCA downed Central Christian 62-22 in the opener, then took a 50-43 win over Clinton Christian in Game 2, both on the Lady Cougars’ home floor.
In the opener, Tori Calizo led a battery of eight scorers for LCA, finishing with 17 points. Liv Miller had nine points and eight rebounds, and Natalie Norris had six points and eight rebounds.
In the nightcap, the Lady Cougars had four players in double figured, paced by Jessi Calizo with 13 points and her sister Tori with 11. Finley Hobbs and Norris had 10 points each in the win.
LCA (8-8) takes on Covenant Christian at 4 p.m. today for the tournament title. The game will be played at Grace College’s Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center in Winona Lake.
Tiger Swimmers Clip Eagles
Warsaw’s swimming teams each earned wins over visiting Columbia City Friday morning. The Lady Tigers won 111-69 while the boys team earned a 109-67 victory to remain undefeated this season.
The Lady Tigers 200 medley relay team of Mariana Malagon, Melissa Deming, Taylor Gunter, Lily Boston won, as did the 400 freestyle relay team of Boston, Rachel Doyle, Gunter and Malagon. Other top performers included Gracie Willig. who won the 200 free; Boston won the 50 freestyle; Greyson Kilburn won the diving; Gunter was first in the 100 butterfly and second in the 100 backstroke; and Deming won the 500 freestyle and was second in the 100 breaststroke.
Malagon was a double winner, taking the 200 individual medley and the 100 freestyle.
The Tiger boys won all three relay races, and also got wins from Michael Ray in the 200 and 100 freestyle; Grant Knight in the 50 free and 100 breaststroke; Cooper Archer in the 200 IM; and Greg Rodriguez in diving. Zach LaLonde was second in the 500 free and 100 bacxkstroke, and Nathan Taylor was second in the 100 butterfly.
Both teams return to Northern Lakes Competition Jan. 11 at Concord.
