AKRON - Because bids came in higher than anticipated, the new concessions and bathrooms project at the Tippecanoe Valley High School athletic fields will be delayed a few weeks.
If bids for a school building project come in under $150,000, a school corporation does not need to have a prevailing wage committee hearing. However, both bids received by Tippecanoe Valley came in at more than $200,000. D-T Construction Service Inc., Silver Lake, bid $248,951. Miller Construction, Claypool, bid $210,875. Even with alternate deductions of $34,420 and $19,245 respectively, the bids are still more than $150,000.The school board voted Monday night during a special meeting to reject the two bids and re-advertise the project with changes and prevailing wages. Alternates for changes in the project also will be advertised.
"I'm extremely disappointed that it's too high," said Bryen Murphy, board vice president, during the meeting. He said the board previously was told the figures would come in under $150,000.
Initially, the school board hoped to have the new concession stand and bathrooms ready by Aug. 17, before the first home football game of the 2007-08 school year. Now, Hal Hoffman, school board member, said, they're looking at a completion date of about Sept. 1.
Architect Wesley D. Welsh, Wabash, told Tippecanoe Valley Superintendent Dr. Daniel Kramer that he would have the advertising for the concessions project to Kramer by this morning. Kramer said the new advertising then would be delivered to the newspapers today. A prevailing wage hearing will be scheduled for next week, Kramer said.
Members of the school board present at Monday's meeting were Murphy, Hoffman, Secretary Rod Eaton and President Dave O'Brien. Absent was Mark Wise.
