Herschel L. Schooley
Herschel L. Schooley, 91, of Grace Village Retirement Community, 337 Grace Village Drive, Winona Lake, and formerly of 1123 Brubaker St., Warsaw, passed away at 11:30 a.m. April 10, 2011, at Kosciusko Community Hospital, Warsaw.
He was born May 22, 1919, in Warsaw, to Reber and Goldie Secrist Schooley. On Nov. 18, 1944, in Warsaw, he married Agnes Geneal, who died Dec. 31, 2008.
He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Army from 1941 until his honorable discharge in 1945. He was active with a tank maintenance division in the North African Theatre. He farmed and worked at Dalton Foundries, Warsaw; in maintenance for the Indiana State Highway Department; and as a diesel mechanic at Warsaw Trucking Co. until retirement in 1982.
He will be lovingly remembered by his three sons: Herschel Jr. (and spouse Chris Vernatter) Schooley, Tippecanoe; Rick (and spouse Cheryl) Schooley, Warsaw; and Brian Schooley, Rio Linda, Calif.; a daughter, Sherry (and spouse Gary) Stebbins, Pinckney, Mich.; 14 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Everett “Mike” (and spouse Alice) Schooley, Warsaw; a sister, Reva (and spouse Angelo) Garifi, Mesa, Ariz.; and two sisters-in-law, Chris Schooley, Warsaw, and Helen Schooley, Elkhart. He also was preceded in death by a daughter, Diana Schue, who died in 1994, and two brothers, Robert and Leo.
Services will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at Redpath-Fruth Funeral Home, 225 Argonne Road, Warsaw, with Pastor Jeff Pfeifer officiating. Military honors will follow by members of American Legion Post 49 and Veterans of Foreign Wars 1126, both of Warsaw, and the Indiana ARNG Honor Guard. Burial will be at a later date at Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw.
