NORTH MANCHESTER – Herbert A. Underwood, 78, of North Manchester, died at 7:50 a.m. July 27, 2011, at Covington Manor, Fort Wayne.

He was born Jan. 23, 1933, in Wabash County, to Elmer A. and Rachael C. Kissinger Underwood. After his mother’s death in 1937, he was raised by his father and stepmother, Opal M. Knapp Underwood. On Sept. 6, 1964, in North Manchester, he married Carolyn Sue Metzger, who survives.

He was a 1951 graduate of Chester High School and received a bachelor’s degree from Indiana Tech, Fort Wayne, in 1958. He worked for E.W. Vanho & Associates,   Fort Wayne, while he attended college, and after graduation he became a partner with the firm. He started Underwood Engineering and Survey, North Manchester.  He served two terms as the Wabash County surveyor and worked for the Wabash County Highway Department as the county highway engineer from 1991 until his retirement in 1996. He was a member of North Manchester United Methodist Church, Deming Masonic Lodge, Fort Wayne Scottish Rite, Mizpah Shrine and Eel River Shrine Club and a former member of North Manchester Kiwanis Club. He was a U.S. Army veteran.

Also surviving are four children: Ann (and spouse Dennis) Bollenbacher, Rockford, Ohio; Julie Rhodes, Torrington, Conn.; Eric M. (and spouse Lesa) Underwood,   Rochester, N.Y.; and Kelli Underwood, Chicago, Ill.; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister.

Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at North Manchester United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kevin DeKoninck officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery, North Manchester.

Calling is from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Grandstaff-Hentgen Bender Chapel, North Manchester, and one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church. There will be a masonic service at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
