ELKHART - Raccoon Run owner/pro Denny Hepler shot an Elcona Country Club course record 64 to win the 1998 Softspikes/Polo Golf Indiana PGA Championship by eight strokes Tuesday.

The victory was Hepler's second in the Indiana PGA Championship with the other coming in 1993. It was his first victory of any kind in the section since the 1995 Indiana PGA Match Play.

Hepler had no bogeys, six birdies and an eagle.

"It was the best competitive round I've ever seen," playing partner Todd Smith said.

Hepler parred No. 18, tying the course record. He now owns or shares 12 course records around the state.

"I'm concentrating on a few swing keys," Hepler said. "I won a lot of tournaments and money with a swing that wasn't worth anything. I changed my swing, and it is really working well."

Hepler had rounds of 72, 69 and 64 to end with a 205 total. Second-place David Hannon finished with a 3-under total.

Sycamore's Quinn Griffing (eighth) and Todd Sandow (12th) also competed. Stonehenge's Dave Schumaker finished in 35th place, and Tippecanoe Lake Country Club's Ron Smock was in 45th place.
