Helpful Harvest

Posted

Aaron Beer watches as his dad, Randy, unloads a combine full of beans while helping harvest one of Earl Kammerer's fields near CR 1050N and CR 200E Wednesday morning. Kammerer died unexpectedly in early September and a group of Leesburg area farmers volunteered their time and combines to harvest Kammerer's crops. Aaron and Randy were part of four generations of Beers helping with the project along with grandfather Nelson and great-grandfather Howard. Dennis Polk, who is organizing the effort, said 25 to 30 farmers using 16 combines and six grain trucks were harvesting Kammerer's 600 acres. The work is expected to be complete in about two weeks and Polk said any farmer who would like to volunteer is welcome. For information, call Polk at 219-831-3555. Photo by Gary Nieter, Times-Union
