Kids who compete at the BMX track in Warsaw must wear helmets during competitions, but are not required to wear them at other times.
"You can't race without a helmet," Jerry Landrum, president of Hire Park BMX, said last week. "When we have any official activity at the track, helmets are required."
"Sure, you can get hurt," Landrum said. "We've had thousands of kids race at that track" in the 10 years it has operated, and "you can count the broken bones on one hand."
The people who supervise activity at the track conduct random safety inspections, Landrum said. "We encourage kids to race safely."
The park maintains adult supervision during races and radio contact with the nearest EMS facility, and it trains its supervisors in first aid.
