Health Dept. Offers Testing For Wells

Posted
Kosciusko County Health Department offers free water testing for county residents whose wells may have been contaminated recently by flood waters.

Health Department Environmental Scientist Bruce Hammer said when a well is submerged in flood water, it can become contaminated with a variety of bacteria. He said flooding doesn't always contaminate wells. In early January, when rain and high temperature brought high water to many areas in the county, Hammer said his department tested several wells, but found a very low rate of bacteria. Still, he said if a resident has had high water on their property and suspect their well may have been submerged or contaminated, it is better to get their water tested for safety.

"If there's a question, if you're worried that your water may have been contaminated, you certainly should get it tested," Hammer said.

Hammer said residents who suspect their well may have been contaminated should avoid drinking their well water until it has been tested and found safe.

The Health Department offers water testing Mondays through Fridays. To get water tested, call the Health Department at 574-372-2349.
