Hazardous Waste Day Draws A Crowd

Posted

Heritage Environmental Services, contractor for the Kosciusko County Solid Waste Management District's Household Hazardous Waste Day, were overwhelmed Saturday by the number of people who participated in the event.

The drop-off site at Zimmer's parking lot was swamped with vehicles loaded with household hazardous waste, such as pesticides, chemical fertilizers, paint products, pool chemical, fluorescent light bulbs, cleansers, aerosols and batteries.

The tremendous participation caused some people to wait in line for more than 45 minutes. The event almost doubled the participation over the past four years with more than 487 vehicles passing through the drop-off site.

SWMD director Marsha Eikenberry said most people were understanding and appreciative in spite of the wait.

"This is a great indication of awareness in Kosciusko County. We have noted the difficulties experienced at this event and will make adjustments for the next Household Hazardous Waste Day in order to make it easier for everyone," said Eikenberry. "I'd like to personally thank everyone who participated for caring about their environment and for being patient in spite of the heat and long lines."
