Lane Williams Hartle, of Warsaw and Boca Grande, Fla., has been named publisher of the Times-Union.
Hartle follows a long list of Williams family members who have held that position since the newspaper was founded by Civil War Gen. Reub Williams. The Times-Union celebrated its 150th birthday this summer.
Hartle is the daughter of the late R.B. (Ted) Williams, who served as publisher of the newspaper until he was succeeded by his late brother, Charles (Reub) Williams. Reub was the publisher until his death in 1987.
The newspaper management was transferred to Michael R. Williams, son of Reub, in 1989. Michael Williams died Oct. 24, 2003.
Hartle and Michael R. Williams were first cousins. She is also a fourth-generation descendant of the founder and is the senior member of the Williams family shareholders.
She assumes the title of publisher following a unanimous vote of the board of directors.
The publisher was born and raised in Warsaw and attended elementary school here. She graduated from Sarasota High School, Sarasota, Fla., and from Tulane University, New Orleans, La.
In 1988 she married Hal Hartle and is the mother of three sons: Mark Norrell, Hutchinson, Kan.; Craig Norrell, Warsaw; and Clifton Norrell, Malibu, Calif.
