Harrison Students Shine in Math Challenge

Posted
Harrison Elementary students shined in a statewide math challenge.

Just before Christmas break, Region 8 and Sumdog Math challenged Indiana students to compete in a math challenge. Five classrooms from Harrison chose to join in the competition.

Harrison Elementary finished in fifth place for the two-week challenge and at one point led all competitors.

Of special note is the fact that five students from Rick Glass’s fourth-grade class scored in the top 10 of all competitors. These students were judged on the number of correct answers they recorded.

In eighth place was Keaton Smith with 9,133 right answers. In seventh place was Makenna Gaerte with 10,443. Luis Alonzo finished sixth with 10,447. Fourth place went to Harrison Mevis with 12,851 and in third place for all of the Region 8 area was Aden Wade with 13,310 correct answers.

During Christmas break, Glass challenged Harrison students to compete with each other in the first-ever Harrison Elementary/Sumdog Christmas Math Challenge. Sixty-students played math games throughout the break. Sixty-one students answered 77,998 questions correctly.

Two students did exceptionally well. Makenna Gaerte in Glass’s class had 11,063 correct answers. Devin Caudill in Judy Kinsey’s class had 11,165 correct answers.

A total of 15 students answered more than 1,000 math questions correctly.

Sumdog Math is a program that increases in difficulty as students master specific skills. Because of the effort of the Harrison students, the school has been awarded a free schoolwide license for a geometry skill-building program from Yenka Mathematics, the parent company of Sumdog Math.
