Harrison Fourth-Graders Participate In STEM Activities

Posted
Students in Mrs. Dean’s fourth-grade class at Harrison Elementary participated in science, technology, engineering and math activities recently.
Students learned about forces that affect motion through the air, and were asked to design a paper airplane that reduced the effect of these forces for maximum flight. Each student designed and engineered their own airplane and tested the design by measuring and recording the distance traveled. Students tried a second design, and collected and compared the data. Finally, students shared their findings with a group and collaborated to make the best possible airplane.
Groups shared their findings with the class and documented their final design so it could be replicated. This activity included all of the elements of STEM through an inquiry-based approach to learning.
According to Lee Snider, principal of Harrison Elementary, “By engaging in STEM activities, Harrison students can see how everything they learn in the classroom connects to the real world. Students in Mrs. Dean’s fourth-grade now see the relevance behind taking measurements and collecting data.”
