Harold W. Muncy

Harold W. Muncy, 82, of Warsaw, passed away peacefully at 5:23 p.m. Sept. 13, 2009, in his residence.

He was born July 20, 1927, in Terre Haute, to Cyrus and Mary Magdalene Keegan Muncy. In 1952, he married Peggy Joyce Cordray, who preceded him in death.

He grew up in Terre Haute and often spoke of the good times with his brother, caddying at the local golf course and swimming at the lake. He graduated from Wiley High School, Terre Haute, before enlisting in the U.S. Army. After his military service, he returned to Indiana and attended Indiana University where he was a member of Kappa Delta Roe fraternity and the varsity swimming team. He received a bachelor's degree in chemistry. He accepted a position with Bituminous Materials Co. Inc., Terre Haute. His job took him to New Orleans, La., where he met, courted and married Peggy, his wife of 56 years. They started their family in Michigan, later making their home in El Dorado, Kan., in 1963. He was a loving and understanding father and a great role model. They were active in a number of their church's groups and he was a member of the Knights of Columbus, He coached the youth swimming team and followed his children's school and sports activities. They returned to Terre Haute in 1985. They were members of St. Margaret Mary Parish.

While raising his family, he had an active career holding a number of positions at BMC. When Elf Aquitaine Asphalt acquired BMC he was promoted to technical director. He retired from Elf in 1994. He was a strong proponent of industry associations and held committee and board positions with numerous local, national and international organizations to benefit the highway industry. Many of the ideas he championed are in use today.

Surviving are his brother, Carl, St. Cloud, Fla.; four sons: Steven (and spouse Rebecca), Raleigh, N.C.; Joseph (and spouse Rebecca), Warsaw; Dennis (and spouse Marcia), Tulsa, Okla.; and John (and spouse Susan), West Memphis, Ark.; a daughter, Mikelette (and spouse Troy) Uahinui, Burlington, Ky.; grandchildren: Steve, Nathan, Jason, Samantha, Matthew, Erica, Kristen and Austin Muncy, and Derek and Zachary Uahinui; and great-grandchildren, Keegan and Michelle.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, Terre Haute.

McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel, Warsaw, is in charge of arrangements.
