Dr. Lee Harman, superintendent of Warsaw Community Schools, was recently named "Indiana Superintendent of the Year" by the Indiana Association of Public School Superintendents, it was announced Tuesday.
"This is really not about Lee Harman, this is about Warsaw Community Schools," Harman said Tuesday. "I'm just fortunate enough to be superintendent of a really outstanding school district."
Harman's selection puts him in the running for the American Association of School Administrators' national Superintendent of the Year award.
Roger Thornton, executive director of IAPSS, said Harman was chosen for the state honor by a statewide committee of school superintendents. Criteria for his selection included choosing the person who best represents the superintendency, Thornton said, and the superintendent thought to be best able to compete nationally.
Harman was chosen, Thornton said, because "he has demonstrated an almost career-long commitment to Warsaw Community Schools.
"His career has been distinguished by solid leadership, a high commitment to students, integrity beyond reproach, he's a role model for kids and educators, we believe parents trust him and he works well with the board and staff," Thornton said.
"This is not something I pursued, wanted or expected, but it's nice for the community," Harman said. "It's because we have a lot of good people and good schools."
Harman will receive his Indiana award at the IAPSS annual meeting in Indianapolis on Nov. 30. The national winner will be announced in February at the AASA annual meeting in Orlando, Fla.
