Happy 100th, Girl Scouts

Editor, Times-Union:
It is that time of year when you will see little girls wearing sashes selling Girl Scout cookies. I was a Girl Scout when I was little, my daughter was a Girl Scout and now my granddaughter is in Girl Scouts. What a great tradition.

This year, however, is special because it is the 100th anniversary of Girl Scouting. Many of us have fond memories of our Girl Scout days. Going to a Girl Scout camp, selling cookies, learning leadership skills. Thankfully not much has changed since 1912 when the first Girl Scout troops were started. The Girl Scout Promise, Girl Scout Law and Girl Scout Slogan ring just as true today as they did 100 years ago. For those of you who have forgotten the promise, law or slogan, here they are:

The Girl Scout Promise
On my honor, I will try:
To serve God and my country,
To help people at all times,
And to live by the Girl Scout Law.

The Girl Scout Law
I will do my best to be
honest and fair,
friendly and helpful,
considerate and caring,
courageous and strong, and
responsible for what I say and do,
and to
respect myself and others,
respect authority,
use resources wisely,
make the world a better place, and
be a sister to every Girl Scout.

Girl Scout Slogan
Do a good turn daily.

We could all live by these words. The world would be a better place if we did.

Happy birthday, Girl Scouts.
