John Hand said U.S. Sen. Evan Bayh's assistant called a couple of weeks ago in search of a family-owned business where the senator could speak and tour the facility.
After an interview, the local industry was selected for the senator's visit and tour of the facility on Hand Avenue.
According to "A History of the City of Warsaw, Indiana," by Michelle Bormet, Hand Polishing was started in 1956 by William Hand at the northeast corner of Ind. 15N and CR 350N. It provided metal finishing for the orthopedic industry, soon becoming one of the largest outside processors of orthopedic prostheses in the United States.
In 1972, part of the business moved to its current westside location on Hand Avenue, and the name was changed to Hand Industries Inc. By then the company had acquired a company named Dirilyte that now sells plaques and recognition awards nationwide.
The entire business moved to Hand Avenue in 1976.
William's son, Terry, became the company's president in 1984. In 2002 his nephew, John Hand, assumed the presidency.
With the emergence of the Internet in the 1990s, the company has used this technology to market many of its divisions and has expanded into web design and programming for outside companies.
